Yeast Hydrolysate

Yeast hydrolysate is a yeast extract from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which has been hydrolyzed or lysed using an enzymatic process. Yeast hydrolysate has been shown in two gold standard research studies to have great promise as a stimulant-free weight loss supplement.

In one 10-week study, body weight, body fat and body mass index were significantly reduced. The unique benefit of yeast hydrolysate is that it has been shown to reduce abdominal fat thickness and abdominal circumference. The differences in abdominal fat thickness and abdominal circumference between the group taking 1 g/d of yeast and the control were significant after 10 weeks of treatment. The total abdominal fat area in the yeast group was significantly lower than in the control group after 10 weeks of treatment (-7.06 cm versus -17.34 cm).

In a second study, subjects who were taking 1 g day of yeast hydrolysate extract were shown to have a 3% reduction in body weight versus only a 1% reduction in the placebo group. Reductions in fat mass, percent body fat, body circumference and skinfold thickness were also significantly higher in the yeast group compared to placebo.

Kudzu Extract

Kudzu is a flower, also known as Pueraria thomsonii, that displays properties that influence energy expenditure and uncoupling protein expression. This can result in enhanced metabolism and fat burning. In one study, eighty obese subjects were randomly divided into three groups and consumed test food containing 300 mg of Kudzu extract, 200 mg of Kudzu extract and a placebo over 12 weeks. The results indicate that Kudzu extract intake reduced BMI and decreases in the visceral fat area, but not the subcutaneous fat area.


Most commonly, this super-antioxidant that is isolated from cruciferous vegetables is used to help reduce estrogen metabolites. However, I3C has also been shown to have potential for reducing body weight and fat accumulation. Specifically, I3C has been shown to reduce pro-inflammatory adiocytokines in fat tissue, which can help inhibit fat synthesis. In vivo models show that I3C inhibited accumulation of fat, either by disrupting differentiation or by directly inhibiting fat synthesis. In animal models, I3C has been shown to decrease body weight and fat accumulation in fat tissue, resulting in improved glucose tolerance. It has also been shown to help normalize the effects of a high fat diet by blunting increases in body weight and fat accumulation and reducing plasma lipid levels.

Garcinia Cambogia

This fruit native to South East Asia contains the active ingredients hydroxycitric acid, or HCA, which has been shown to have an effect on fat metabolism by reducing the amount of fat that gets stored. It can also have an impact on appetite. Studies have shown that it can help reduce body weight, cholesterol and body fat as well as keep blood sugar levels balanced and even improve mood by elevating 5-HTP. HCA seems to work by preventing the enzyme citrate lyase from making body fat.

In one study, 30 overweight subjects followed a basic exercise protocol of 30 minutes of walking and consumed a 2000-calorie diet along with a patented form of HCA or a placebo for 8-weeks. At the end of the study, the HCA group lost an average of 12 pounds and decreased BMI by 6.3 percent. The placebo group only experienced a loss of 1.7 percent in BMI. In another study completed with 60 people, the HCA group lost an average of 10.5 pounds versus 3.5 pounds for those taking the placebo.
